Music Genres

Music Genres

A music genre is a conventional category that identifies pieces of music as belonging to a shared tradition or set of conventions, Music can be divided into different genres in several ways.
The most common genres are ones such as: Hip Hop, Rock, Classical, Rap, R&B and Pop.

Rap

Rap is rooted in the pain of black-American experience which began with slavery. While slaves were working in the fields, they would often sing. Part of the songs they sang were "call and answer" selections. One leader would call out part of the song and the rest of the slaves would answer with the next line.

Biggie Smalls
Rap has evolved from Hip Hop and is now one of the most popular genres, with artists such as Biggie Smalls (The Notorious B.I.G.) and Tupac Shakur, who although have been dead for many years there music is still listened to in today's society, The modern day rappers include Jay-Z, Eminem and many more. Although it is one of the most know genres many people say that "Rap" is not what it used to be as many people believe it is becoming more along the lines of Hip Hop and not Rap.

Gangsta Rap

Gangsta rap is a subgenre of hip hop music that evolved from "Rap", It reflects urban crime and the violent lifestyles of inner-city youths.

The genre was introduced in the mid-1980s by rappers such as Schoolly D and Ice-T, and was popularised in the later part of the 1980s by groups like N.W.A. After the attention that Ice-T and N.W.A attracted in the late 1980s and early 1990s, Although surrounded by controversy Gangsta rap became the most commercially lucrative subgenre of hip hop. Some gangsta rappers have been associated, or allegedly have ties with the gangs as large as the Bloods and Crips.

Artists include Dr. Dre, Ice Cube and Eazy-E (Who is often referred to the Godfather of Gangsta Rap)

N.W.A.
In the mid 1980's N.W.A. became the first Gangsta Rap group, with there single 'Straight Outta Compton', Which marked the beginning of the Gangsta Rap ere. N.W.A are sometimes credited as the most important group in the history of hip hop.

Rap has evolved from times as early as the slave trade and from Hip Hop, Becoming its own genre creating artists such as Tupac, Biggie Smalls and then Gangsta Rap which created N.W.A. Although being around for such a long time it is still very popular in today's society.
