Evaluation

Double Page Spread Progress

Firstly i had to select the papaer to the size i wanted which was landscape international paper A3. Then i placed the image that i was using onto the page by clicking file, place then seleceting the image. I then fitted it to the size i wanted which was the full page.
The Next stage was adding in the text for the article. I typed up the article which i had already planned out to write abou the artist i was writing about, then i positioned the text in a colum styled layout like what you see in the majority of magazines. I chose to use black text for my article as it kept to my house style and is easy to read on the page.
Then i began to add in all the other types of texts such as the pull quote, headline and the description of the article. I chose to use a pull quote as i seen it whilst undergoing my research and i think it is an important part of the double page spread as it lets the reader know what is in the article and leads them on to read it. I also added in another image which is of the same artist in a stuidio recording which relates and fits in well with the article, below this image there is a caption whcih describes the image above. I also placed the 'Hustle' headline which i used on my front cover in the bottom corners of the magazine next to the page numbers which are important as they make things a lot easier for the reader. I chose to use different colored fonts for different parts of the page as i wanted there to be a significant difference between them.

Double Page Spread

My finsihed double page spread is a main image of Daniel Cole, the image takes up the both pages and acts as the background image. The whole article is about him and his potential in the music industry. The way his personallity is portrayed fits in well with the image. I kept the layout quite simple as apposed to the NME magazine which is quite busy and crowded. The image i used was taken in black and white as i think it compliments the house style.

The text i used is black for the article and yellow for the headlines, the pull quote is in white text as i wanted there to be a significant difference between the type of texts as they were all different.

I chose to use a pull quote as i seen it in my research in many magazine and i think it is an important factor as it drags the audience in because it is an appealing quote which will make the audience want to read it.

I have positioned the page numbers in the bottom corners of the pages, as this is important to any magazine. Also there is the 'Hustle' text what i used for my headline on my front cover. I seen this in NME, Q & Mojo therefore i decided to do it myself.

I also used a secondary image in the article which i positioned in the middle of the page to the left of the article. This image is Daniel Cole recording in the studio, underneath this image there is a tagline which states what is happening in the picture.

Double Page Spread Research

This double page spread is very basic in terms of the layout, personally i think this layout looks more professional compared to a messy, busy layout.  The colour scheme of this page is black, white, blue. The lighting of the picture is quite dark which keeps to the house style of the magazine. The headline "When Mars Attacks" this and the image to the left suggests that the article is going to be about bruno mars. The text is in a colum styled layout which looks professional and is easy to read. as apposed to the image the font is quite small, this suggests that the image is more important, possibly to attract more people in. The tone of the magazine is very appealing to the audience as it is telling them a story. There is only one image on the double page spread, which i think looks professional, although i think the article would look better if the image was the background of the double page spread, however then the image would look less important as it would not be as clear. The target audience for this are teenagers/adults due to what they talk about in the article and what termonology is used.

Contents Page Research

This contents page is from NME, it is a very simple, block layout. There is quite a few images on the page which are different sizes, this shows that some articles are more important than others. The majority of the images on the page have not been edited, this gives the images a sense of realism. The fonts for each article are different sizes and font styles which seperates each article from the others, as well as making them stand out in their own way. It also makes everything seem a lot more intresting. The fact that the page numbers are easy to see makes it simpler for the reader to find the story they're looking for. In the bottom right corner there's an advert for a subscription to the magazine with pictures of other front covers and offer, this is displayed in many magazines as it promotes the magazine further. The title of the contents is not simply contents which makes it different and slightly more intresting. There is no competition on offer in this particular contents page, however i will add one into my contents page as it makes it more exciting for the reader.

Contents Page Progress

I started off with my background image which i then changed the colour to grey as i thought it complimented the house style. Then i added in the title of the magazine in the same style of that on the front cover. I did'nt want to add to much text on to the page as i wanted to keep it simple.
Next thing i done was add in the images, the positioning of these images gave me enough space to write underneath each one for further detail on the article. i did not want to use to many images as it would make the page look crowded and unprofessional.
The next step was adding in the page numbers which i placed at the bottom half of each image. The reason i used red on some and black on others is because due to the image some of the numbers were not visble. therefore i changed the colour's so they were easy for the reader to see.
Finally i added in the text, i kept to the house style and used black and red text as it stands out on the background i have chosen and is easy to read. For the quotes i used black text and for the captions i use red text as i wanted there to be a noticeable difference between the two.

Contents Page

For my contents page i decided to go with a simple layout as i believe it looks more professional. I kept the house style of Red, Yellow and White, however i also used black text in parts as it made the text easier to read. I also placed the date on the page aswell as this is what i noticed most magazines did whilst doing my research.

On my contents page i have five images which are linked to the main stories in the magazine. I have also used quotes from the articles as the headline for each articles as i think this is what draws the readers in. Then below each quote i have a said what the article is about. For the text i chose to use black for the quotes and red for the titles, i did this as i wanted there to be a noticeable difference between the two. I have also used page numbers in the bottowm right of each image, i positioned them here as it is then clear to the reader where everything is.

At the bottom left of the page i have a small section dedicated to a subscription advertisment, most magazines do this as it promotes their magazine a little further. I have used my front cover as the advertisment image for the subscription.

In the top right of the page i have a small text box which is advertising a competition, the competition is a chance to record with an artist and the image behind it is an artisit recording in the studio, therfore it fits in perfectly.

Front Cover Stages

When i was making my front cover, the first thing i done was place the image on an A4 sized canvas. to do this i clicked: File, place, then selected the image i chose for my front cover and then clicked ok.
Next thing for me to do was to add in the title of the magazine "Hustle". Once i had placed the font on the page i had to change the colour of it using the paint bucket tool to fill it. i chose yellow as it is eye catching and stands out. I also began to place the text for my main article. For this i used a plain red bold font to stand out. the red also mixes well with the yellow.
Then i added in the next part of the main article using the same bold text and same size. Then i decided to change the title of the main article to yellow rather than red as it looks more proffesional and stands out from other text on the page.
Next i added in all the other text onto the page, keeping to the house style i used red and yellow text for the articles, i also used white text for certain parts of the page as it stood out more as yellow did not mix in well with that part of the background.

I aslo put in the barcode at the bottom right corner of the page as this is the typical location where you would find a barcode on a magzine.

Finished Front Cover

Here is an image of my finished front cover, I decided to call my magazine Hustle which is across the top of the magazine. The font i used for the name of the magazine best suited the genre (Rap) in my opinion as it sharp and unique which represents the genre well. It is also very eye catching because of the yellow colour and the style of the font.

Above the masthead is the price and date the magazine was isued, the reason this is in smalle font is because it does not need to take up much space. Slightly below the masthead is the website for the magazine.

The articles around the sides of the main image are inspired from other magazine such as VIBE which is my main inspiration. Using different fonts and sizes for specific parts shows that some articles are more important or more exclusive than others.

The main article is placed in the centre of the magazine in large text to ensure it stands out from the rest so the reader knows that this is the main article. By being in the centre it is made clear that this article is related to the main image.

I also placed a bar code in the bottom left hand corner, because this is where they are commonly found.

My house style is red, white and yellow. This is because it stands out well on the background and shows the importance of certain aticles. It is also eye catching and gets the readers attention. I was careful when placing certain colours as in some places they could not be seen clearly and would take away the eye catching effect.

Font

To the left are fonts that i would'nt use as some of them look more for young children as apposed to my target age. Also some of the fonts are difficult to read which be frustrating for readers aswell as my work being pointless. Also considering my genre is Rap non of these fonts fit that genre and will therfore not look as proffesioal or effective.

To the left are fonts that i would use as they are clear and easy to read, therfore the readers can understand exactly what i have written. Also these fonts look proffesional and fit well in with the target audinece as they are not too childish but are not to plain and boring. They also suti the genre of Rap well as they are unique fonts which best relates to the genre. Also some of these fonts will give the magazine lots of variety making it stand out aswell as being unique.

Mood Board

My magazine will be based on Rap music so the artists i have used for my mood board are best known for this genre.

Typography

After analysing several music magazines it is clear that the popular colours used are Yellow's and Red's as these colours are eye catching. Another thing that i have noticed is that all the magazines all have at most 5 colours on the page, this is because they do not want the page to be full of colours as it may lose its effectiveness and will look messy and out of place.

Due to this the colours that i will be using on my front cover will be bright colours like red font on a white background so it looks simple and professional. I chose this because out of all the magazines that i looked at Q magazine was the one that i first noticed which is the effect that i want my magazine to have on the viewers, as apposed to "We Love Pop" which although uses bright colours like pink, it doesn't stand out as much because there is to much on the page and it looks messy and unprofessional, and is more likely to appeal to young children.

Below is a print screen of a mockup of the style of font and layout of my magazine, also there are images of magazines which i have used to decide on my Typography.

My Concept

The Concept of my main artist is based on an upcoming artist (FITZ) who following the release of his debut album is about to begin his first UK tour which will set of in his hometown of Liverpool. The image i have used for my Front cover is him leaning against a brick wall with tape across his mouth and his arms folded. This image represents him as a dark character, the headline on the front cover is "FITZ: THE UNTOLD STORY". The tape across his mouth and the arms folded go's in well with this healdine as it suggests that he is closed about himself and the public do not know much about him.

For my double page spread i used a different artist named "Daniel Cole" who is rated as the next big thing in the music industry and the article will consist of an exclusive interview with the youngster, reavealing all their is to know about him and what he is about. The image i used is him side on leaning against a wall looking down. My article will consist of information such as where it all started and who was his insperation etc.

Magazine Covers

On this front cover the main image is the focus of the magazine  as it is an artist looking directly at the camera. The white background compliments this front cover as it gives us a clearer image of the artist and ensures us that this is the main focus.

The text keeps to the house style of the magazine using the red and gold text. The text which says "JAY-Z" is the largest text on the pages, this is because it is the main article in the magazine as the image on the front cover is also JAY-Z. The other articles in the magazine are in smaller red font so the attention is focused on the main article.

The design of the magazine is very simple, with the logo in the top right hand corner and then the text highlighting that it is based on JAY-Z.

This front cover is similar to the one above as the artist is again the main focus of the magazine, however this one is not a extreme close up of the artist. The image of Eminem makes him come across as very angry and threatening, they have used a gesture code to make him look like this. the tattoos also connote that he is unique, and his attire shows that he is a simple person.

The cover lines are simple, some are bigger than others which connotes that some stories are more important than the others. They have use black and red typography to correspond with the house style of the magazine.

The mise en scene is plain which makes Eminem stand out and it also connotes that he is the most important feature on the magazine. the use of no secondary images connotes that again he is the focus point and he also fits in well with the genre and generic conventions of this magazine.

The masthead on this cover is superimposed by Chris brown which connotes that the magazine has a regularly readership and the target audience will automatically recognise the magazine when it is distributed.

The main image is a medium shot which shows facial expression and his clothing which is quite plain but the main headline which states Chris Brown catches the audiences attention. The mise en scene is again plain which keeps chris brown as the main focus.

The layout of the magazine is busy as all the space is used up.

They have used a house style which consists mainly of green and white which looks clear on the background image.

The text again is all different sizes which connotes that some stories are more important than the others.

Contents page mock

Above is my mock of a contents page, i used this layout as i got my inspiration from a NME contents page. The layout in have used is very basic and tidy as apposed to a busy layout such as "kerrang". This layout makes it easy for the reader to view aswell as catching their eye. The title of the contents will be at the top of the page in the centre because this is where people tend to begin their reading. The main image will be on the right hand side with the information for this article below it. This seperates it from the other imformation which makes it seem more important. Their will also be a list of contents on the left hand side of the magazine, displaying everything which the magazine contains. There will also be an advertisment at the bottom of the page.

College Magazine

Above is my college magazine cover that i made using photoshop, i used this image because i believe that it best represents the college atmosphere.

Mock Shots

This image is good because it is a medium shot and is very clear with a high angle. The mise-en-scene is also very good as the person is at a desk with a computer and a book beside them which represents a school enviroment. This image would be good for a front cover.

This shot is also very good as it is a medium shot and again is quite clear and has a high angle. The mise-en-scene is also good as there is a computer and desks and shows the student studying.

This image is a medium shot with a high angle, the mise-en-scene is good as the desks, computer and paper shows it is a school enviroment. However the shot is quite blured and does not look very proffesional as it is slightly tilted.

This a medium shot with a high angle which isnt the best as you cant really see the person's face properly as the image is blured and the lighitng isnt great. The mise-en-scene is ok as you can see desks to show a school enviroment, however their is another person who is half in the shot which takes the attention away from the main image.

Using Photoshop

 Opening up Photoshop.
Selecting the size of the paper i will be working on, i selected a preset of international paper and size                 A4.
i have now opened up the image i will be editing and have positioned it where i want it, i have now     rasterized the image so that i can now edit the image. i edited it by removing the background of this image and using the magic wand tool and then filled in blank areas with the smudge tool.
I have now placed my second image on to the page which i will be using as my background. My second image will need to be the layer underneath the first image so it then can be positioned behind the main image. i then positioned it where i wanted it and then what i had was them my finished image.

above is two images, one which i have edited and then one that is the original, i have used the healing brush tool to edit this by removing the spots from the image, when theses two images are compered you can then tell the difference between the two.

Above is another image which i will be editing.

The first thing i did to the image was making it black and white, i did this by selecting the layer and then clicking the black and white tool on the adjustments section. above is what it looked like.

the next step was using the rectangular marquee tool selecting the lips from the image and adding it to its own layer so it was just the lips on the page.

i then put all the images back onto the page and this is what it looked like.

Action Plan

My questionnaire results have shown me that rock was the most popular genre that teenagers prefer to read about, closely followed by Rap/R&B, therefore i have chosen to stick with my initial chosen genre which is Rap. Also my target audience will be teenagers as this was what my results shown me was the most popular age group. i will also relate it more towards males than females as again my results shown me that the majority of people who read music magazines where male.
I am going to create a Rap/R&B based magazine as this although is not the most popular genre it is still very popular. The reason i have not chosen Rock is because as it is the most popular and after doing some research i have found that there are lots of Rock based magazines already on the market which will result in lots of competition, i also looked up the amount of Rap and R&B based magazines that are currently on the market and i discovered that there are very little. Taking all this in to account that it why i have chosen to stick with Rap/R&B. My results have also shown me that i will have to include exclusive interviews as this was the main reason why teenagers read music magazines, although including this i will have to keep it relevant and appealing to my target audience.

Cohen's Moral Panic

Cohen's Moral Panic is when an intense feeling is expressed through the media. This leads to threathening the social order and enforcing and promoting certain types of behaviour etc. Examples of this is people on the cover of music magazines (NME,Kerrang,Vibe).

XXL Front Cover

Images such as the one to the right are an example of this as Chris Brown, most commonly for his assault of Pop Star and ex girlfriend Rihanna, publishing this artist on the front cover of a magazine could be seen to be promoting or justifying this behaviour as if it is acceptable.
Magazine's writers and producers often publish the current and most popular artisits on their front covers regardless of behaviour or reputation as they simply want to make money, and publishing covers with artisits such as Chris Brown on they will do so as people will want to read this.
Folk Devils

Pete Dohery (NME)
Folk devil is a person or group of people who are portrayed in folklore or the media as outsiders and deviant, and who are blamed for crimes or other sorts of social problems.
e.g. Pete Doherty who's immage is portrayed in the media as someone who abuses drugs and ok about it. This could promote this sort of behaviour as it shown in the media as it a good thing to do as various musical artists and other people in the media are doing so.

College Magazine

Who is the target audience?
The target audience is students both male and female more between the age of 15- 18, as they may be looking to go to sixth form or may be in sixth form and want to get information about it. As it is a magazine for a college then it may appeal to teachers and staff who work at this specific school as they may want to know information about the school just as much as the students.

How do you know who the target audience is?
With the magazine being from a school, it is obvious that the main focus would be the students and possibly the teachers. Therfore the parents will also be intrested in the magazine as they want to see whats going on in the school and how the students are getting on. The teachers will probably already know most of the information in their but they still may want to read just for extra information and it is more likely that the students willl produce the magazine so they may want to see how well they are doing creating the magazine.

How does it engage the audience?
As this cover is very plain it doesnt really suggest much and personally i dont think it would appeal to the audience. Also the font is very basic and straightforward and the layout is very simple. i would have been more creative with the cover and used font and a layout which would appeal to the readers. However as they have used images which are relavent to the school/College so therfore then this will catch the students eye as the image is relavent to them.

What is the ideology of the college from the front cover?
On the cover, there are two stories, one about an award to one of the pupil and the other article is about a tragedy in the community. This cover appeals to the students as they will want to see what it says about the student as they may know the student. also the other article some student/staff may not know about the tradgedy within the community, therfore they will more likely want to know about it.

What do they consider important?
By looking at this cover the main thing that i would say that would be considered important is the students achievments as they have placed a large image with large text, which shows that it is important as they want to encourage their students to do well.

Questionare Results

My results show that the majority of people who read music magazines are male aged 15-18, however they also show there where more people who don't read magazines apposed to people that do.
Out of the people who read magazines; 70% of them purchase magazines monthly and the remaining 30% weekly, therefore it shows that monthly magazines are more popular.
My results also show that the most popular music genre was 'Rock' and the least popular being 'Dance'.
According to my results what seems to appeal to people in music magazines is the exclusive interviews.
The price people are willing to pay for magazines varied but what seems to be the ideal price for a music magazine is £3-£4.
In conclusion to this, i will use these results and apply them to my production taking into account the price people are willing to pay for a magazine, the most popular genre and the frequency the magazine is released to ensure success.

NME Institution Research

In lesson we watched the history of the NME and this is a summery of what ive found out...

First Cover of NME

  • First Issue was published on 7th March 1952.

  • NME stands for New Musical Express.

  • Initially published in a non-glossy tabloid format on standard newsprint.

  • In the 1970s it became the best-selling British music newspaper.

  • In 1972 the paper found itself on the verge of closure by its owners IPC (who had bought the paper from Kinn in 1963).

  • In the mid 1980's NME was again faced with the fear of closure when they begin to publish Hip-Hop articles and moved away from Rock. sales apparently dropped because of this as Hip-Hop was relativley new to the UK.

  • The start of 1990 NME where back on their feet and found themselves in the centre of the 'Madchster' scene and began covering new British Indi bands.

  • In 2000 Steve Sutherland left to become Brand Director of the NME. He replaced as editor by writer Ben Knowles.

  • In May 2008 the magazine received a redesign, aimed at an older readership with a less poppy, more authoritative tone. The first issue of the redesign featured a free seven-inch Coldplay vinyl single.
